<p>Ahmed Lopez, who cycled for Cuba’s Olympic team but now lives in Hialeah, won the recent Florida State Spring Championships at Brian Piccolo Park in Cooper City.</p>
<p>Lopez set a record of 10.73 seconds for 200 meters in the seeding time trial at the park&#8217;s velodrome and prevailed in a series of elimination races to earn the gold medal.</p>
<p>According to the Sun Sentinel, he “had to race about six times over three hours in the two-lap sprints on the velodrome’s 333 1/3-meter banked track.”</p>
<p>Roger Hernandez of Coral Gables took the silver medal and Alexander Gill of Hialeah won bronze.</p>

<p>The velodrome at <a href="http://www.broward.org/parks/bp.htm" target="_blank">Brian Piccolo Park </a>presents Winter Series Track Cycle Fest on Saturday evenings from now until Feb. 27. This is a multiple-race event in which all contestants compete against one another in five disciplines: a 200-meter flying start time trial, a 5K scratch race, a 3K individual pursuit, a 15K points race and a 1K time trial. Points are recorded in reverse order so that the rider who finishes with the fewest points is the overall winner.</p>
<p>The participation fee is $8 per cyclist (insurance surcharge included). ANSI/Snell helmets are mandatory and cyclists should carry their 2010 USA Cycling license.</p>
<p>Spectators are welcome. The park’s regular weekend entrance fee of $1.50 per person is in effect. Children under 5 are free.</p>
