Ahmed Lopez, who cycled for Cuba’s Olympic team but now lives in Hialeah, won the recent Florida State Spring Championships at Brian Piccolo Park in Cooper City.

Lopez set a record of 10.73 seconds for 200 meters in the seeding time trial at the park’s velodrome and prevailed in a series of elimination races to earn the gold medal.

According to the Sun Sentinel, he “had to race about six times over three hours in the two-lap sprints on the velodrome’s 333 1/3-meter banked track.”

Roger Hernandez of Coral Gables took the silver medal and Alexander Gill of Hialeah won bronze.

The velodrome at Brian Piccolo Park presents Winter Series Track Cycle Fest on Saturday evenings from now until Feb. 27. This is a multiple-race event in which all contestants compete against one another in five disciplines: a 200-meter flying start time trial, a 5K scratch race, a 3K individual pursuit, a 15K points race and a 1K time trial. Points are recorded in reverse order so that the rider who finishes with the fewest points is the overall winner.

The participation fee is $8 per cyclist (insurance surcharge included). ANSI/Snell helmets are mandatory and cyclists should carry their 2010 USA Cycling license.

Spectators are welcome. The park’s regular weekend entrance fee of $1.50 per person is in effect. Children under 5 are free.
