Think Hiking Is Boring? Run The Trails!

Edilson Cremonese, a Hollywood resident who works in physical therapy in Pembroke Pines, is a member of South Florida Adventure Racing Group. He told us he doesn’t like hiking, so we had to ask why.

Why don’t you like hiking?

Hiking for me is boring. I don’t like to go slow. It wastes time. I like to go out and do what I have to do and get back. So I run the trails.

Why don’t you run on streets?

I like trail running because it’s in nature. It’s a way to get out of the city even if the trails are in a city park. At least I don’t see the buildings. But sometimes I run in the city.

Is trail running better for your legs than running on pavement?

It’s easier on my legs but that’s not why I do it. I like to forget about the city.

Where are the best trails for running?

To me some of the best locations for training in South Florida are Markham Park in Sunrise, Oleta River State Park in North Miami and the levee behind Markham Park.

Do you compete?

For the past three years I have done adventure races in Argentina, Chile, Australia, Brazil and of course the United States. The races range from three hours to 10-day races and include trail running, mountain biking and kayaking. This year I am training for a four-day race in August in Lower North Shore, Quebec: the Raid International Eco. I also compete in triathlons locally and in other places.

What’s your training routine?

For trail running it consists of five workouts a week. On Mondays I run six miles on Markham’s mountain bike trails in about 50 minutes. On Tuesdays I do interval training around my neighborhood for about 30 minutes and on Wednesdays I do a 3.5-mile run in my neighborhood. On Thursdays I head back to Markham Park to do the same training that I do on Mondays. I rest on Fridays and Saturdays and then run for two hours on Sundays at Oleta. If I’m training for an adventure race, I have to include mountain biking and kayaking, all in nature as much as possible.

***Warning: According to Markham Park’s policy, only mountain bikes are allowed on the trails. No runners are allowed.***
