Miami-Dade Plans To Help Cyclists On Rickenbacker Causeway

By Editor • Jul 3rd, 2010 • Category: news

Every day hundreds of cyclists pedal over the Rickenbacker Causeway connecting Miami to Key Biscayne, joined by more runners and pedestrians. Often it feels like Russian roulette, and sometimes athletes do get killed or injured.

Miami-Dade County is finally proposing a $4.5 million plan to calm speeding automobiles along the way. The plan sets aside 25 cents from each toll over the causeway for the next five years to pay for widening and creating better cycling/running lanes; installing warning signs; and creating a cycling and pedestrian path on Virginia Key, which lies between Miami and Key Biscayne.

According to the Miami Herald, “The county will also study reducing speed limits along the causeway, which now range from 30 mph to 45 mph — often putting fast-moving cars perilously close to bicycles traveling in the dedicated, on-road bike lanes that run along the full length of the roadway.”
