Photographers Of Local Kiteboarder Killed By Shark Disciplined

The hospital where a South Florida kiteboarder was taken after being attacked by a bull shark has disciplined staffers who took unauthorized photographs.

On Feb. 3 Stephen Schafer was kiting off Martin County when the shark attacked. Rescue workers took him to Martin Memorial where he was pronounced dead later that day.

According to the Palm Beach Post, some hospital employees “shot and e-mailed cell phone photos of Stephen Howard Schafer after he was killed by a shark at Stuart Beach.”

“Hospital officials would not identify the employees or say how many were disciplined. The employees received anything from written warnings to suspensions or loss of their positions — but none were fired.”

Schafer’s death by shark is the only one recorded in Martin County’s history.
