On Nov. 21 thrill seekers, outdoor enthusiasts, businesses and clubs had a chance to compete in a special race designed to explore the Upper Keys. The Amazing Race of Islamorada consisted of a three-mile run, a two-mile kayak trip and a six-mile bike ride. The event started at Robbie’s Marina and was sponsored by The Islamorada Wrestling Club and Robbie’s Marina.

Teams consisted of three people (one person per category) or one person who participated in all three categories.

Overall and women’s winner was Kim McConnell in 2:01:36 and the top man was John Flannery in 2:02:05.

“We all met (afterward) at Midway Cafe for a small party,” said organizer Mark Terrill, who is president of The Islamorada Wrestling Club. The club mentors teens who will receive a portion of the proceeds. “A lot of people want me to do this again in the early spring. I will try it again then with the help of some local businesses who now want to help out.”

  1. I have been on several bike tours that Mark puts on during the weekends. They are a lot of fun. We usually meet in Islamorada and ride then end up having lunch with a group of people from all over.
