Health insurer Humana has launched the Freewheelin bike sharing program in which 18 bicycles are offered to the community for free. Anyone 18 or older can borrow a Freewheelin bike to run errands, take a leisurely spin or get some serious exercise, all the while improving their health and saving the environment and their gas money.
The bikes are located at the Humana Guidance Center at King’s Point and are available between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, by presenting a valid photo ID and credit card (in case the bike is not returned). Bikes come equipped with helmets, bike locks and maps. Riders can even track their miles ridden and carbon footprint reduction.
Bike-sharing is a social movement in which bikes are situated at designated stations throughout cities for individuals to use for a specified amount of time. Freewheelin is one of a number of initiatives Humana is developing to encourage people to have fun and get active, including everything from rewards for walking to video games that promote exercise.
The Humana Guidance Center also is offering three guided bike rides each week, varying from an easy, scenic cruise to a longer, more athletic workout.
The center is located at 7620 Nob Hill Rd. Fore more information call 954-724-1540.
