Inner City Outings is seeking more volunteers who enjoy kids and the great outdoors. The organization introduces underprivileged children in Miami to local nature spots.

Part of the Miami Sierra Club, ICO regularly organizes field trips, beach cleanups, hikes, campouts, canoe trips and similar activities. On Sept. 26 it’s hosting a kayaking trip on the Loxahatchee River.

Established in 1988, ICO’s mission is “to expose youth from inner city and underserved populations in and around Miami to the wonders of the natural environment.”

According to ICOMiami.org, “Most ICO leaders and volunteers are professionals between the ages of 20 and 45, who enjoy, working with youth, have an adventurous spirit, and enjoy kicking back and watching for wildlife or a sunset. Volunteers can participate in the ICO program in many ways. Obviously the most enjoyable is to assist with the outings and mentor the children. However we also need volunteers who may be able to help with the administrative tasks, like fundraising, publicity or teaching environmental education to both the adult volunteers and children.”

Meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of each month. For more information visit ICOMiami.org or e-mail Mark Walters: mark@icomiami.org.

  1. ICO not only gives inner city children a different view of their environment, it gives its volunteers a different view of inner city children. All benefit as people of different backgrounds, professions and economic means meet, enjoy, and learn about our natural environment. Although the “average” age of volunteers is 20 to 45, we have some volunteers who are above average in age as well as energy, commitment and enthusiasm! Check out ICO if you like kids and the outdoors.

  2. I have been a volunteer on a few outings, and its been a rewarding experience to give back to the community and teach our kids the Great Outdoors we have here in South Florida..These outings make learning about our natural enivronment fun and exciting for kids and gives them a fresh new approach on how to spend their weekends !
