In 1967 the National Surf Lifesaving Association sent a team to Fort Lauderdale to compete in the first East Vs. West Lifeguard Championships, said local diving legend Neal Watson. The association eventually changed its name to the Unites States Lifesaving Association and has grown to more than 100 chapters across the Unites States.
And now, after 42 years, the championships have returned.
Fort Lauderdale won the bid to host the 2009 USLA National Lifeguard Championships, which will take place from Aug. 6 to 8. Teams from all over the country will compete.
The Junior Lifeguard Championships will also take place during the three-day event.
