The first in a series of stand-up paddleboard races took place on April 26 along Fort Lauderdale’s Intracoastal Waterway. Kick-ass photos and commentary are available at FKSA.org/showthread.php?p=40169
The next race in the series, presented by Liquid Surf & Sail, was on May 17 at Miami Yacht Club in Miami. Its course, according to promoters, was “around all the movie stars’, rap stars’ and Internet porn site owners’ houses on Star, Palm and Hibiscus islands.” Round trip was approximately five miles. The June 21 race started at 9 a.m. at Shake-A-Leg Foundation in Coconut Grove and went through the Coral Gables Waterway before returning to the start. The fourth race took place on July 26 and returned to Fort Lauderdale.
Proceeds are reported to go to charities such as Shake-A-Leg and Miami Yacht Club’s youth classes.
Stand-up paddleboarding is an ancient Hawaiian form of surfing that is becoming popular on South Florida’s relatively calm water. A person stands on the board and uses a long paddle to travel.
