South Florida is now host to a standup paddleboard race series.
On April 26 was a race off Fort Lauderdale beach with a roundtrip from Coconuts restaurant to Tiki Beach watersports.
The next competition is on May 17 and starts at 9 a.m. at Miami Yacht Club in Miami. Its course is, according to promoters, “around all the movie stars’, rap stars’ and Internet porn site owners’ houses on Star, Palm and Hibiscus islands.” Round trip is four to six miles.
The June 21 races starts at 9 a.m. at Shake-A-Leg Foundation in Coconut Grove and goes through the Coral Gables Waterway before returning to the start. Round trip is four to six miles.
Proceeds are reported to go charities such as Shake-A-Leg and Miami Yacht Club’s youth classes.
Standup paddleboarding is an ancient form of surfing that is becoming popular on South Florida’s relatively calm water. A person stands on the board and uses a long paddle to travel.
