“Mr. Marlin” Jeff Conine has a new nickname: Mr. Ironman.
On Saturday, Oct. 11 Conine completed the Ford Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.
Conine, 42, retired from Major League Baseball after the 2007 season. The Weston resident finished his first Ironman in 14 hours, 43 minutes and 45 seconds.
According to an article by South Florida Sun-Sentinel reporter Sharon Robb, his splits were 1:32:41 (swim), 7:35:47 (bike) and 5:13:56 (run). Conine was 1,499 among a field of 1,731. ”Conine trained for the Ironman in less than a year that included taking time off for a broken collarbone in December. He bettered the finishing time of Marlins president David Samson who completed the 2006 Ironman in 15:36:44.”
Robb, who sometimes writes for South Florida Adventures, also reports that West Palm Beach’s Carol Hassell won her age group and was the top local woman finisher in a career-best 11:52:50.
Other local finishers: Brian Monaghan, Coconut Grove 9:36:38; Dean Warhaft, Miami 10:44:01; Shayne Macherowski, Boca Raton 10:47:23; Racheal Wood, Deerfield Beach 12:26:24; Robert Whitmore, North Palm Beach 13:03:50; Robert Anderson, West Palm Beach 13:07:39; Martin Hynes, Oakland Park 14:40:13; Neil Bayer, Coral Gables 15:22:58; Joseph Marx, West Palm Beach 16:02:46.
